Isaiah 61

Today’s reading in our daily plan is Isaiah 61. Take a moment to pray, asking God to speak to you from this passage. Then read, using the following notes and questions to help you get everything out of the passage.

SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)

  • This passage gives insight into the character of the Messiah
(Jesus) while highlighting the positive effects that the Messiah will bring to the world. Verses 1-3 combine to state what the Messiah’s purpose is and what He will be doing on Earth. Several different action steps are mentioned such as
turning sadness into blessing, comforting the brokenhearted, and freeing
captives and prisoners of sin. Verses 4-9 cover how people will be restored
from their past brokenness and redeemed in Jesus. Verses 10-11 is a declaration
of joy and thankfulness for God and His salvation.

SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)

  • Jesus was a blessing because of the salvation He brought to
all of humanity. Jesus came on the earth to free people from their pain and sin
and thankfully for us, He succeeded in doing that. Overall, this passage is the
condensed version of God’s purpose on Earth, God’s salvation, and the reaction
that people have when they receive that free salvation.

NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)

  • Do you hurt? Are you ashamed or broken? Do you feel like you
can’t get out of a certain situation no matter how hard you try? Go to God if
you’re feeling this way because His salvation and love is the only thing that
will bring true healing and joy.
