We Could Be Heroes

Wanting to be a Superhero.

When you were a kid, did you ever wish you were a superhero?

Maybe you wished you could shazam? He went from a normal person to a superhero just by saying, “Shazam!” Ever try it? Like go by yourself into the backyard, look around to make sure no one was watching … “Shazam!” Nope, not me I guess.

You might have wanted to be Wonder Woman. She was a super cool superhero. My only question was: What’s the deal with the invisible airplane? The idea was that people wouldn’t see her approaching. But … she didn’t become invisible. So, I suppose people were like, “Look, here comes Wonder Woman! Wow, she looks comfortable sitting there floating through the sky!”

Growing up, we wanted to be superheroes. We dreamed of being that special, of having that big a purpose, of having that significant an impact.

Getting to be a Superhero.

At Verve, we’ve been doing a series through the Bible book of Esther. We’ve seen that Esther was an ordinary person who lived an extraordinary life. There was nothing remarkable about her, but she is one of the heroes of the Bible. She literally saved a race of people and changed the course of history. How?

God.

All through the Bible we read the stories of people who became heroes. People who lived the kind of lives and had the kind of impact we dream of. The one remarkable thing about them is that they are unremarkable. So how do they live such heroic lives?

God.

How could you be a hero?

God.

You might be normal and unremarkable. Perfect. That’s exactly the kind of person God uses.

The critical piece, what allows God to turn people who feel like zeroes into heroes is … willingness. In the Bible, we repeatedly see God call a person to some great task or mission. The people God calls are always unsure, lacking faith, full of doubt. They feel completely unqualified. But … they are willing. Nervous. Hesitant. But willing. And God uses their willingness to do something amazing with their lives.

We see that with Esther. She was scared and initially says no. But her no becomes a yes, and Esther becomes a hero.

Willing to be a Superhero.

Are you willing? Are you willing to do whatever God wants? To be used however God wants to use you?

I think you get a great hint at the answer by whether you’re already doing what God has already asked you to do. For instance, God has asked you to … give generously, to volunteer, to share your faith, to show hospitality.

Are you doing what God has already asked you to do?

If not, perhaps God won’t ask you to do something special, something unique, something that sets you up for greatness. Maybe he’s waiting to ask till he knows you’re willing to do what he asks?

You have a chance to be a hero.

You can be that special. Have that big a purpose. That significant an impact.

The critical piece is willingness.
